Imogen Stuckes is currently working with Storm’s consumer PR team as part of a three-month paid internship. Here’s what she has to say about life at a London communications agency so far:
When I completed work experience at a PR agency last summer, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in communications, and having secured a 2:1 in my English Literature with Classics degree I embarked upon an internship at Storm.
So what’s it REALLY like being an intern at a London communications agency? Before I arrived I assumed I would mainly be observing, photocopying, making tea… how wrong I was! (Although everyone at Storm loves their hot beverages, it’s not a pre-requisite that I make them for everyone). I was thrown into the world of PR, being given responsibility from the start with my very own specific consumer clients to work on. I began by cutting coverage and doing send outs, which allowed me to get to know the brands and understand the consumer audience more. Two months in, and I’m now trusted with doing sell-ins, research and even writing social content!
One of the best things about PR is seeing the coverage you worked for appear in print or online. It’s a great feeling to see a glowing review about a product you’re representing, not to mention knowing that you’ve achieved a result for your client.
Working in communications is the perfect job for an arts graduate: I get to use my creativity during brainstorms, and dust off my writing skills when creating competition copy or social content! There’s never a chance to be bored, as the work is so varied, and I’m working on a different brand every day ranging from food to property to hotels.
I’m also lucky enough to have a wonderful, friendly and sociable office, who make coming into work every day that little bit easier. Being in the heart of London is great, too: if the sun actually comes out we can sit by the Tate and have lunch. A highlight of the week has to be when we are visited by the resident Storm dog, Louis, the cutest and most important member of the team!
Above everything, being an intern at Storm has really confirmed my wish to continuing working in public relations and I can’t thank the agency enough for letting me experience every part of the world of PR. I’m now one step closer to becoming a character in ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ and therefore achieving my career goals…
