What can someone starting out in PR expect from an internship at Storm? That’s what we wanted to find out when we sat down with Jessica Watson, our intern from the other side of the pond, after her two-month stint as part of our B2B team.
1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, and lived there pretty much my whole life. I am a senior in college/university and made a spontaneous decision to intern abroad. I never been out of the country or even interned before, so both were new experiences for me. Luckily, it all worked out because I got to learn a lot about myself while also gaining valuable work experience.
2. Why did you choose to intern at Storm?
I guess the reason I choose Storm was because, from the website, I thought it would be a good place to fully immerse myself in the public relations world. Also, my ISA advisor keeps telling me how Storm is such a warm and friendly environment that will be able to help guide me into gaining all the knowledge I needed about my field.
3. What were the most valuable lessons you learnt in these past few weeks?
I think the most valuable lesson I learned is the value of teamwork and effective communication. I hate to be a bit corny but I think it’s crucial to understand there is no I in Team. If you do not have a good team around you, then you might find things to be a lot more stressful and unsuccessful. At Storm, I think you get a chance to see that teamwork is something every PR agency needs and that everyone plays a key role in making a campaign successful.
4. How would you describe working at Storm?
Fast-paced and a lot of chasing, lol.
5. What would your advice be for those who are looking to start a career in PR?
As someone who is just getting started, I would say intern and absorb as much information as you can from those who are in the PR field: don’t be afraid to ask questions!
